Limerick District League 1980 - Present

Coonagh United entered the Limerick league in the 1980's after they won everything Clare had to offer. They only decided to enter youth and schoolboy teams in the late eighties so that youngsters from the parish and beyond had another team to play for instead of just Caherdavin and Ballynanty. The schoolboy teams had immediate success as in the 1989/90 season the U - 14's won the B League and finished Runners Up in the Cup.

Biggest Moment

Coonagh United's greatest ever moment was on Sunday 27 February 1994 when they faced Derry City in the last 16 of the FAI Youth Cup. Below is an article from the Limerick Leader Newspaper published on Saturday 26th February 1994 :

HISTORY MAKING COONAGH HOST DERRY CITY IN FAI CUP

COONAGH United, one of the babes of youth football in the Limerick region, look forward to the greatest moment moment in their short history when they entertain Derry City in the last 16 of the FAI Youth Cup at the Pike Field. Coonagh, rank outsiders to even reach this stage of the competition, will look back on what has been a momentous season and won't have any inferiority complex facing one of the competition's favourites.

They are current leaders in the youth division two league and so impressive have they been in recent outings that one felt they would have been an ideal asset to the premier division. Certainly, they have seen off the callenge of two premier league outfits in the shape of Mungret Regional and latterly Caherdavin just before Christmas. That victory over their arch-rivals and near neighbours was one to savour. For many years youngsters in the parish used play for etheir Caherdavin or Ballynanty but five years ago Coonagh, who were finding it hard to attract new blood to their ailing junior team, decided at last to enter a team in the youth grade. They haven't looked back since. True, they weren't over successful but they got a number of young exciting players coming through on what has been a very busy conveyor belt.

They also entered several young teams in the schoolboy leagues with the knock-effect meaning that Coonagh is now one of the wealthiest clubs, player-wise in the region and it won't be long before the juniors reap the benefits. For many years the club existed as a winter sport to keep the GAA players happy and fit but that has now changed with the club enjoying phenomenal success at all levels. Their schoolboys are doing very nicely, thank you very much, while the youths currently top the second division league with Kilmallock whom they beat only a few weeks ago. It should not go unnoticed that the joint leaders of division two are Limerick's standardbearers in the national and provincial competitions respectively. Coonagh manager Fred O'Connor, no stranger himself to the winners rostrum having skippered Prospect to Lawson Cup glory back in the 60s. Not one to take and run, Fred decided that with his playing days well and truly over it was time to put something back into the game. He has been with Coonagh now for some time building a highly succesful framework from which to launch a serious challenge for honours. Even now Fred's priority is to win the league and anything else will be treated as a most welcome bonus.

He is looking forward to the visit of a team of Derry's calibre. "We could make them play at Clondrinagh," he said but wants only the best for his team as well so they approached Pike Rovers who were only too delighted to lend them their magnificant facilities at Crossagalla. Fred has no fear of Derry. He knows his youngsters will relish the superb playing surface at Crossagalla and will be hoping that the likes of Niall will be hoping that the likes of Niall McNamara and Brian Masterson will add to their growing reputations. Both have twentey goals apiece scored out of a tally of 77 for the club so given half a chance will make life difficult for their more vaunted opponentes.. I watched them against Caherdavin on a bitterly cold day in December and must admit to being very impressed with their determination and never-say-die attitude. They battled hard in dreadful conditions but at the end of the day they were deserving winners.

Graham Minogue, one of several players who learned his trade under Mikey Cronin & Co. as an 8 year old with the club is the current skipper of the side and a defender par excellence though he will be the first to admit that he has a marvellous defence around him including a top-class net-minder in the shape of Ian Costello. Nigel McElligot, Jason Mullane and Brian McNamara are teak tough defenders and if Derry are going to win this one then they must first get past this hard-tackkling quartet. In the middle of the park Barry Dwane, Paul King, Aengus O'Keeffe and Brian Drennan are fast, talented youngsters that will have to win the midfield battle if frontrunners McNamara and Masterson are to have a chance of putting one over on the Northerners. They say the strenght of a team can be gauged by the quaility of players on the bench and in that regard O'Connor and his assistant Tom Bowler are well endowed. Conor Horan, Ultan Quinn, Adrian Looney, Michael Graham and Thomas Cronin are all good enough to take over should the need arise.

In all, Coonagh have played five FAI matches beating two premier teams, Mungret and Caherdavin on the way as well as Shelbourne, Star Rovers and Shannon Town.

In all, as I said, they have scored no fewer than 77 goals in all competitions this year and wouldn't it do their hearts good ... it would certainly be a much needed boost for the game at this level locally were they to win. It won't be easy but not impossible.

They won't want for support, either, as Coonagh will be a deserted village come Sunday afternoon. All that remains is to wish Fred and the boys the best of luck and hope they are included in the draw for the quarter-final proper.

Sadly Coonagh lost this match but it still was a historic achievement. Coonagh did themselves proud

Last season was a very succesful season for the Under 14's. After drawing there first two games and losing the third we went on a winning spree of ten games in a row to win both the League and Cup.

In goals was David Nolan who's supurb saves in the league finale against Shannon town kept Coonagh's league hopes alive. The defence consisted of David Gammel and Andrew McMahon in the center with Brendan Crowley ocassionally moving back from midfield. Ruairi Bourke, Christopher Constidine, Joey Sheehan and Kevin Grimes all fought for the two full back positions. In midfield, Barry Dolan and Gary Kennedy competed for left wing while Wesley Daly and Brendan Healy played on the right. In center midfield was Brian "Scinner" Healy and Brendan Crowley with Colin Reidy occasionally moving back from the forward line up. In attack was captain Colin Reidy, Pat Gavin and Ivan "Lanky" Lanchaster.

Coonagh won the league on April 2 1999. The final game was a dramatic 3 - 2 victory over Shannon Town. The following article, which was published in the Limerick Leader Newspaper on Wednesday April 7 1999, explains the game as well as strongly praising our Captain and top goaalscorer with a massive twenty-nine goals in 13 games.

Reidy the Hero as Coonagh capture U-14B league title

Shannon Town...........2
Coonagh.....................3

At a wind swept Corrib Drive on Friday last Coonagh, thanks to a Colin Reidy hat-trick, captured the Iaranrod Eireann U-14B league title after a five-goal thriller with fellow title contenders Shannon Town.

With the home team needing to win this one and then account for Star Rovers in their last game to win the league, they put in a tremendous display of attacking football and were bitterly disappointed to lose by the odd goal in five.

Coonagh, playing with the strong wind in their favour in the first half, found themselves a goal down shortly after the start, Patrick Toomey giving Shannon Town the perfect start. Within minutes Colin Reidy got the first of his three goals to put Coonagh back on level terms. Coonagh continued to dominate the game but found the Shannon Town defence in outstanding form, repelling wave after wave of Coonagh attacks. Just when it seemed Shannon Town would go in for the half time break on level terms, again Colin Reidy struck to give Coonagh a slender half time lead. Having to play against the wind in the second period with a single goal advantage Coonagh knew that the home team would throw everything at them in an effort to turn the game in their favour.

From the start Shannon Town bombarded the Coonagh goal, and on a few occasions David Nolan in the Coonagh goal denied Patrick Twoomey equalising for Shannon Town. With fifteen minutes left in the game Shannon Town restored parity following a corner from the right. Garry Fitzgearld sent in an unstoppable header to the net much to the delight of the large home support. For the next 10 minutes Shannon Town laid seige to the Coonagh goal forcing a number of corners which proved fruitless.

With time running out Coonagh in a rare attack were awarded a penalty after a reckless tackle by a Shannon Town defender, up stepped Colin Reidy to complete his hat-trick and secure the Leagure title for Coonagh

Shannon Town: Christopher Moylan,Michael Maguire, Daniel McDonagh, Ian Fitzgearld,Conor Neville, Padraig Dinneen, Gary Fitzgearld, Declan McCarthy, Patrick Twoomey

Coonagh: David Nolan, Christopher Constidine, Joey Sheehan, Andrew McMahon, David Gammell, Brian Healy, Gary Kennedy, Brendan Crowley, Colin Reidy, Wesley Daly, Pat Gavin Ivan Lancaster, Ruairi Bourke, Kevin Grimes.

Referee : Jerome Deloughrey

This article praises Colin Reidy for his game-winning hat-trick but it fails to give credit to the rest of team for their magnificant performances in this game and the entire season.

CUP SUCCESS

To win the cup we had to play and win 3 games. The first game, another match against Shannon Town, was also played in Corrib Drive. This game was a lot more one sided than the last as we won comfortably 3 - 1. Barry Dolan scored a penalty and Colin Reidy grabbed another two to secure the victory.

Our next match (the semi-final) was against Hyde Ranagers in Hyde Park. The game which was very tense, finished two all after extra time so the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Amazingly after five penalties each it was only 2-2 and it went to sudden death. Ivan Lancaster stepped up after Hyde had missed there penalty and calmly slotted the ball home to secure our final place.

The Final was played on a neutral pitch and we were playing the team who eventually finished second in the league, Mungeret Regional. It was a preety boring game and it finished 1 - 1. Pat Gavin gave us the lead in the second half but they equalised with a poor goal from a miss hit free kick. Extra time again proved scoreless and we had another penalty shootout on our hands. We stuck with the same five people as took the five against Hyde ; David Gammell, Colin Reidy, Andrew McMahon, Pat Gavin and finally Joey Sheehan. We did much better in the first five and after 4 penalties apiece it was 4 all. Then Mungeret missed a penalty and it was up to Joey Sheehan to win the cup and coplete the double. It was equally ironic as he had missed a penalty in a similar situation in the last match. He scored magnificantily and the team rushed on to the pitch to congradulate him.

Sadly things haven't gone as well this season, now that we are in the A league. We started with a walkover against Fairview and then won 3 - 1 against Aisling Annacotty. In our next match we picked up a draw against one of the league favourities Janesboro. Sadly we lost our next 3 matches in a row. First to last years A league winners Caherdavin, second, a dissapointing result against Corbally and third, the away game to Aisling Annacotty despite the fact we dominated the game, we lost 3 - 2 to a last minute goal. But then on Wednesday 12 April, away to Caherdavin we redeemed ourselves. We beat them 1 - 0 in a fantastic game at The Country Club, thanks to yet another fantastic goal from Colin Reidy. Indeed every player in green played great. We avanged the three defeats we suffered to them in both cup andd league this season, as well as inflicting their first league defeat of the season. This victory confirmed our status as one of the best teams in the city and kept our hope for honours alive. I hope to soon have an article from the Limerick Leader concerning this memorial game
